Be Patient

By Evangelist John BJ Hall

When my children small there was a Christian musical called The Music Machine. One of their favorite songs was “Have Patience” It said, “Have patience, have patience. Don’t be in such a hurry. If you don’t have patience you’ll only start to worry. Remember, remember that God is patient too. And think of all the times that others have to wait on you.”

It has been said that patience is the most dangerous thing that a Christian can pray for. This is true primarily because patience comes to us through testing and trial.

In James 5:7-11 the brother of Jesus commands us “Be patient.” The reason for the command is made clear when the verse continues, “… brethren, until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.” The subject here is the coming of the Lord. But it is also an illustration that farmers must be patient. The climate is ultimately in control of what comes in the harvest.

He even tells us to take as an example the suffering and affliction of the prophets. But they were found happy that endure. He said, “You have heard of the patience of Job.” Remember, Job never knew the purpose of his suffering. But Job received the tender mercies of the Lord when He restored far more than Job had lost.

Patience is not inactivity. As we have seen it is commanded of us. There is also a negative application. He tells us not to murmur or swear. In other words, don’t lose control.

With these three examples; the farmer, the prophets, and Job, James has given us inspirational examples of people with patience. James also said, “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials,  knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” (James 1:2-4)

Remember that the Lord is in control and He walks with you every step of the way.

The Road

The road has been so long,
The journey fraught with tears.
Sometimes the thought of being wrong,
Would fill my heart with fears.

For though the road is long,
I know that Christ is strong.
And through Him I can sing a song.
In Him, I can go on.

Through life I’ve traveled on,
And joys have been there too.
For I have trusted in God’s Son,
The best that I can do.

For though the road is long,
I know that Christ is strong.
And through Him I can sing a song.
In Him I can go on.

Now Trusting in the Lord,
Does not free me from pain.
But He has promised in His word,
To see me through the strain.

For though the road is long,
I know that Christ is strong.
And through Him I can sing a song.
In Him I can go on.

The battle is not o’er,
Though vict’ry has been won.
For while I travel in this shore,
I’ve only just begun.

For though the road is long,
I know that Christ is strong.
And through Him I can sing a song.
In Him, I can go on.
