Grow Strong In Faith

By Evangelist John “BJ” Hall

Romans 4:20 (NASB)
“… with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief, but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God,”

Our passage today speaks of Abram’s faith. God had promised Abram that He would make him the father of many nations. Considering Abram’s age at the time, this seemed a rather outlandish promise. He and Sarai were both well beyond child bearing years. The name Abram means “High Father.” And Sarai means “My lady, or my princess.” But God had a plan for them that was beyond their comprehension. He changed Abram’s name to Abraham, which means “Father of a great multitude.” Then He changed Sarai’s name to Sarah which means, “Lady; princess; princess of the multitude.” God wanted them to remember His promise EVERY time they heard their names.

One reason why God delayed in sending Abraham and Sarah a son was to permit all their natural strength to decline and then disappear. It was unthinkable that a man ninety-nine years old could produce a child in the womb of his wife who was eighty-nine years old! From a reproductive point of view, both of them were dead.

But Abraham didn’t walk by sight. He walked by faith. He believed that what God promises He will do. He believed the same way Paul did when he wrote in  Philippians 1:6 (NLT) “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Charles H. Spurgeon said, “If we want blessings from God, nothing can fetch them down but faith. Prayer cannot draw down answers, from God's throne except it be the earnest prayer of the man who believes. Faith is the angelic messenger between the soul and the Lord Jesus in glory.” This is what the Apostle Paul was saying in Philippians 4:6 (NASB77)  “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

There was a little Irish boy named Jimmy. Everywhere Jimmy went he wrung his hands and said over and over, “Worra, worra, worra.” One day he was able to go to a revival held by the great preacher C.H. Spurgeon. That night little Jimmy got saved.

From that day forward, little Jimmy walked around with a bounce in his step and a smile on his face. Someone asked him, “Jimmy, you used to go around saying ‘Worra, worra, worra.’ What  made the difference.”

Little Jimmy responded, “Well, I used to worra about all my sins. But now I got saved ‘cause Jesus put his bloody hand down on the page that recorded my sins.” He concluded, “Now I got nuttin’ to worra ‘bout.”

Little Jimmy caught the secret of Abraham and Sarah. He began to grow in his faith. How about you today? Whatcha worra’n ‘bout? Trust in the Lord with all thy heart.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NASB77)  “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And do not lean on your own understanding. 6  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.”

My Prayer Room

This is a place of solitude.
A place where God and I may talk
And I can take an interlude
That helps me live, and walk the walk.

It is a place where love abounds
And fears meet their match in God’s peace.
A place where tears fall to the ground
And doubts are made to cease.

In my prayer room there’s a Bible
That’s open and ready to use.
And there’s an alter where I am liable
To bow, as prayer I choose.

Would you join me in my prayer room
And make it your prayer room as well?
If so we can see God’s will bloom
And of His great love we can tell.
