In The Beginning

By Evangelist John BJ Hall

There are two places in the Bible where the words “In the beginning” occur. Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1 both begin with these words. In both cases you should leave out the word “the.” This leaves you with “In beginning.” The concept here is timeless. In the very act of beginning or more accurately “Before time began to begin.”

Notice that the next word in John 1:1 is “was.” Was is known as a durative imperfect, meaning continued action from the past. It means that the Word was in the beginning. What beginning? Just as far back as you want to go. There is no time before creation in which God and The Word were not. If one could say, “What about a gazillion years before creation” God and the Word were still there. You see, not only did God create the heavens and the earth, He created time itself. And BEFORE He did that, God and the Word were there.

Just what is the Word? The  word is Logos. The Hebrew word is “memra.” The concept is that the Word is all that is known or knowable about God. The very essence of who God is.

The Apostle John here sets forth the truth that the Word (Jesus) and God are one. In fact, the Greek is more specific than this, because in the Greek language the important word is placed at the beginning of the sentence and it reads, "God was the Word." That is emphatic; you cannot get it more emphatic than that.

So, before the beginning of time there was the Word. And the Word was with God and God was the Word. If you want to deny the deity of Christ you will have to go somewhere other than scripture.

Now in order to forgive man for sin and reconcile him to God there had to be an atonement made. The Word of God says that He was the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world. (1 Peter 1:19-20 KJV) 19  But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20  Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you,) The word foundation means conception or laying a foundation and the word world is the Greek word cosmos. In the Old Testament when you see the word Heavens it is the word cosmos. The Message paraphrase Bible says in 1 Chronicles 16:25-26 “…GOD is great—well worth praising! No god or goddess comes close in honor. 26  All the popular gods are stuff and nonsense, but GOD made the cosmos!”

So this God who created the cosmos became a man so that He could pay the debt of our sin.

God’s Plan

God’s plan for all the ages,
Is a wondrous thing to know.
He has much grace and mercy
As history will show.
He started out with nothing
And from it built the Earth.
And everything was beautiful,
‘Till mankind sin gave birth.

God’s plan for all the ages,
Has never changed you see.
He still loves sinful humans.
He showed it on a tree.
His own dear son was hung there,
On that old cruel cross,
And Jesus died to save us,
From death and endless loss.

God’s plan for all the ages,
Will always be the same.
He wrote it with His own blood,
With words so clear and plain.
He went to make a place for us,
Where we will someday live.
For he will come and take away,
Those who ask Him to forgive.
