The Place Called the Skull

By Evangelist John BJ Hall

Luke 23:33 (NASB) “And when they came to the place called The Skull (Calvary), there they crucified Him …”

The place is called The Place of the Skull due to the shape of the rocks beneath its brow. Another name, Golgotha is the Hebrew word for skull or heap of skulls. It is described as a place where executions were administered by the Roman practice of crucifixion.

Charles H. Spurgeon said, “The hill of comfort is the hill of Calvary; the house of consolation is built with the wood of the cross; the temple of heavenly blessing is founded upon the riven rock—riven by the spear which pierced His side. No scene in sacred history ever gladdens the soul like Calvary's tragedy.”

Isaiah 53:5 (NASB) prophesied, “But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.” Through the horror of the cross the payment of the debt of our sins was made. Peace was declared between God and those who would trust in His Son.

The First Born

The soldiers and the crowd came armed
As though He were a thief.
And His disciples were alarmed
And some were struck with grief.

They rushed Him to Sanhedrin court
And falsely they accused Him.
Thinking this “rebel” they could thwart
By harming life and limb.

Soon on to Pilots house they went,
Accusing Him of treason.
And Pilot soon found they were bent
To slay Him without reason.

They beat Him with the cat of nine
‘Till He was almost dead.
They covered Him with robe so fine
With thorns piercing His head.

They bowed and mocked Him as a king
And smote Him on the face.
But He would soon feel all the sting
Of sin from all the race.

They cried to crucify the Lord
But set Barabbas free.
And Pilot bowing to the horde
Sent Christ to Calvary.

They slew the Savior of all men,
Then put Him in a tomb.
But Jesus rose to live again,
The “first born” of death’s womb.

Oh yes, Jesus was the first born.
There’s many more to come.
Many millions who are Forlorn.
Won’t you reach out to some?

But if you do not know Jesus,
He’s waiting for you now.
Won’t you ask Him in, just like us?
Come now and your love vow.
