Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether or not they will walk in My instruction. Exodus 16:4

There is much conjecture about the authorship of this hymn. Was it George Askins or was it George Atkins? We will not settle this question here. Both were circuit-riding preachers in the 1800s. Both were actively involved in camp meetings which called for repentance and salvation. Someone once said, “If we are really serving the Lord, it matters not who gets the credit.”
Can you in just a moment of thought think of another hymn that actually speaks of the reality of Hell and the urgency to trust the Lord? The hymn begins with a call to prayer. How many churches do you know of which are, while the preacher preaches, actively praying for the salvation of souls? How many believers consciously pray for the Holy Spirit to move in sinner’s hearts? Or, how many are more concerned about the style of music, than they are about the destiny of souls?

Father, forgive us for majoring on the minor issues. Drive us to our knees for the souls of those who are lost and doomed to a devil’s Hell. Let Your Holy Spirit convict us of our complacency. Amen.
